Jewish progressives and Democrats have come out against the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the US Supreme Court, because they believe she stands in opposition to the staunch progressive principles of predecessor Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) Executive Director Halie Soifer said that aside from the fact that there will be a presidential election in only 38 days, “Amy Coney Barrett stands in opposition to everything the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought for throughout her career and threatens to reverse decades of progress with regard to access to affordable healthcare, equality, separation of church and state, and reproductive rights.”
A major objection to Coney Barrett appears to stem from the fact that she is a practicing Catholic, who self-describes as “Orthodox Catholic.” Progressive Jews fear that Coney Barrett will not rule according to law, but according to her personal views on issues such as abortion and reproductive rights. There is a concern that Coney Barrett, in particular, will overturn Roe vs. Wade, making it difficult for women to obtain abortions.
