Dozens of Modern Orthodox rabbis recently signed an open letter calling for “moral clarity” in response to what they call a Gaza humanitarian crisis. The letter stresses that Hamas is guilty of heinous crimes, yet insists that Israel must bear responsibility to prevent “mass starvation.” On its surface, that sounds compassionate. In reality, it reveals how even Jews who should know better–and who are in a position of leadership–can be misled by Hamas propaganda amplified by the UN and mainstream media.
Consider the facts. Since May, nearly 183,000 tons of humanitarian aid have entered Gaza. Yet the UN reports only 67,000 tons—a staggering gap of more than 115,000 tons. Where did the rest go? Israel has done everything possible to facilitate aid deliveries, even while Hamas steals supplies, hoards fuel, and diverts food to its fighters. By parroting distorted numbers, these “rabbis” lend legitimacy to Hamas’s narrative while unfairly casting blame on Israel, the very nation struggling to protect its own citizens from terror.
