Jacob Steinmetz, a 17-year-old Orthodox Jew from Long Island, is expected to be chosen in the Major League Baseball draft this Sunday. Steinmetz already won a scholarship to Fordham University and is 181 in his draft class. But can he make it in the big leagues as a Shomer Shabbos, Shomer Kashrus Yid?
A graduate of the Hebrew Academy of Five Towns and Rockaway, Steinmetz may be frum, and really great at baseball, but it’s anyone’s guess what will happen if he is drafted. What happens when he can’t play on Friday night or Saturday games? Will it be like early immigrants to the US who encountered signs on businesses reading, “If you don’t show up on Saturday, don’t bother to come in on Monday.”
