Jewish summer camps have long been an important part of building the Jewish identity of our youth. This year, many camps are planning to stay closed due to the coronavirus epidemic. A small number are still hoping to welcome campers, including our own summer camp, TheZone.
The history of Jewish camps in the United States goes all the way back to 1893, according to an interesting piece on the subject in the JTA. Jewish summer camps give urban children a chance to get out of the city, be with other Jewish children and Jewish role models, and to learn more about their heritage. While social distancing measures may cramp their style, Jewish summer camps still have a lot to offer Jewish children. As such, we’re looking forward to welcoming lots of wonderful campers at our two resort locations in the Catskills, in the coming summer months.
